No matter how much care we take to eliminate wrinkles on our faces and gray hair on our heads, we may still feel betrayed by uncontrollable signs of aging on our necks.

Perhaps you are developing a double chin, fatty jowls, or a “turkey wattle”, or perhaps the skin on your neck has become loose and droopy.  These embarrassing aesthetic problems may be genetic and infuriatingly resistant to non-surgical correction.  They may be the result of extreme weight loss in a short time period, such as bariatric (weight loss) surgery.  But whatever the reason, if you tired of hiding behind turtlenecks or scarves, neck lift surgery may be the solution you are looking for.  Whether as a stand-alone operation or in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures (such as a facelift), neck lift surgery can eliminate unsightly bands, lax neck muscles, fatty jowls, and excess, loose skin to rejuvenate your neck and restore its naturally-beautiful shape.

A “neck lift” is a catch-all phrase used to describe a set of procedures that may be performed in isolation or in combination to address your specific neck problem.  For example, a so-called turkey wattle or the appearance of bands running vertically along the neck may be caused by weakened or loose neck muscles and require a platymaplasty, in which the neck muscles are tightened and altered.  In extreme cases, some excess neck muscles may even be removed.  If your problem is a double chin or fatty jowls, your surgeon may recommend liposuction to remove surplus fatty tissue.  During a cervicoplasty, your surgeon will tighten loose, sagging skin and remove excess skin.  During your initial consultation, our board certified plastic surgeons at Tribeca Medaesthetics will discuss each of these options and work with you to develop a customized surgical neck lift plan, taking into account your unique facial anatomy and specific aesthetic goals.

Neck lift procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, using general anesthesia or intravenous sedation depending on your medical requirements and the scope of the intended procedure.  Incisions are generally made behind the ears and/or under the chin, and in every case extreme care is taken to minimize post-surgical scarring.  Once the requisite adjustments have been made, whether to the muscle, fat, and/or skin, your surgeon may place permanent sutures or a special type of permanent adhesive glue to maintain the desired shape.  The length of these procedures will vary depending on the scope of the problematic areas, each patient’s individual aesthetic goals, and whether other surgeries are being performed at the same time.

After a neck lift, you may experience some bruising and swelling around the jaw, ears, and neck, most of which should subside within a day or two after the procedure.  Once this swelling disappears, the results of your neck lift should be immediately visible, but you will continue to see gradual improvement over the next 1-3 months.
