The original member of what has now become the Restylane family of injectable dermal fillers (includes Restylane, Restylane-L®, Perlane®, and Perlane-L®), Restylane injections are a non-invasive means of correcting moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and restoring lost volume to the face and lips, thereby rejuvenating one’s overall facial appearance.
Restylane’s active ingredient is a biocompatible formulation of hyaluronic acid, meaning that it has the same structure and function as the hyaluronic acid your body naturally produces and will eventually be broken down organically.
Maintaining adequate levels of hyaluronic acid is extremely important for preserving a youthful facial appearance, because hyaluronic acid transfers vital nutrients from your bloodstream to your skin cells and brings water to the surface of skin, rehydrating it to keep the skin looking revitalized and supple.
The hyaluronic acid injected during Restylane treatments adds support and fullness to facial tissues that have lost volume or elasticity as a result of environmental factors and/or the normal aging process.
Restylane is frequently used to restore lost facial volume and to smooth the appearance of lines and folds in the following facial areas:
- Nasolabial folds (laugh lines)—the lines extending from the nose to the corners of the mouth
- The area just below the nose and above the upper lip
- Oral commissures—the corners of the mouth
- Marionette lines—the area that extends downward from the corners of the mouth to the jawline.
Restylane is the first and only FDA-approved product for lip enhancement in patients over 21 years of age, and can be used to add volume to the lips, or to improve the shape or proportions of the lips, bringing them into balance with the patient’s other facial structures. For patients who are concerned with potential discomfort during their dermal filler procedure, Restylane is also offered as Restylane -L, a hyaluronic acid formulation that includes the numbing agent lidocaine and is designed to minimize pain during and after treatment.
The proper administration of dermal filler injections requires a high degree of skill and precision, which is why it is imperative to have your Restylane injections performed by a trained practitioner who specializes in this field. Dr. Jason A. Shapiro, M.D. makes it a priority to stay up to date with the latest developments in the field of non-surgical skin rejuvenation procedures in order to offer his patients the most effective treatments with minimal side effects and long-lasting results. RESTYLANE REGIMEN AND PROCEDURAL DETAILS
Because Restylane is non-animal-based, there is no need for pre-treatment allergy testing. Your Restylane treatment will be performed in the Tribeca Medaesthetics office, and typically takes no longer than one hour, after which you may immediately return to your normal daily activities. Following your treatment, you may notice some temporary swelling, bruising, pain, redness, and tenderness at the injection sites; however, these symptoms are generally very mild, can be minimized with cold compresses, and will subside within a few days. The wrinkle-reducing and skin-rejuvenating effects of your Perlane injections will be noticeable immediately after your first treatment, and will last for approximately six months; however, these results can be significantly extended when patients follow the “Restylane Regimen” maintenance program.
The “Restylane Regimen” is a treatment plan designed to ensure that patients achieve optimal, long-lasting results from their Restylane injections. Patients following this regimen will have an initial treatment, supplemented by a follow-up treatment scheduled approximately 4.5 or 9 months later. In general, only 50% of the original amount of Restylane is needed at the follow-up treatment to achieve and extend the desired wrinkle-reducing effects. Clinical studies have demonstrated that 95% of patients following the Restylane Regimen experienced skin smoothing results for up to 18 months after their initial treatment. Complementary cosmetic skin treatments (ie. chemical peels, microdermabrasion and dermal fillers) can be performed in conjunction with Restylane injections to amplify and maximize your results.
