What is a Facelift?
Facelift is a procedure performed by a plastic surgeon to reduce the signs of aging from the face and restore a more youthful and rejuvenated facial profile. The procedure involves surgical excision of loose skin, tightening of underlying weak muscles in the face, and repositioning of excess fat.
Facelift cosmetic surgery may be recommended to adults who are bothered by excess facial skin and fat and conspicuous wrinkles and facial lines, and are keen to achieve a younger looking face. Patients in the age group of 35 to 65 are usually most suitable candidates for a facelift.
Best results can be achieved when the patient still has some amount of skin elasticity remaining on the face. With an experienced plastic surgeon, it is possible to reduce five to 10 years off the patient’s face with this surgery. Patients in Miami Beach, South Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and nearby areas may consult with Dr. Shapiro and Dr. Shapiro for facelift surgery.
The surgeon may perform a facelift employing the traditional surgical techniques or an advanced endoscopic technique. The traditional technique involves treatment of the lower, mid-face and neck area. The surgeon will excise the loose skin and fat and tighten underlying weakened muscles in the targeted areas of the face. Loose skin, excess fat deposits, sagging jowls, sagging mid-face, laugh lines, double chin and creases below lower eyelids can be corrected effectively with a traditional facelift technique.
Sometimes the plastic surgeon may suggest an endoscopic facelift surgery, which is a relatively less invasive procedure. The scarring is usually lesser and the downtime involved in the procedure is also reduced. The procedure involves insertion of a miniature camera through small incisions placed in discreet areas of the face. The surgeon is able to view the underlying facial structure clearly on the monitor, which allows them to perform the procedure more precisely and conservatively. The technique is used effectively to lift the cheeks and upper face.
Facelift cosmetic surgery may be performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation as per the circumstances of the case. The surgeon will begin the procedure by making an incision in the temple area along the hairline to keep the scarring inconspicuous. Through the incision, the surgeon will tighten the underlying muscle and tissue.
Excess fat may be repositioned and loose skin may be removed to achieve a tighter and firmer facial contour. After the procedure, the surgeon will close the incision with sutures or skin adhesives. The entire procedure may take about two to three hours, and is usually performed on an outpatient basis.
Results in case of facelift surgery are long lasting. Full effects of the procedure become visible as swelling and bruising resolves. Patients who are able to maintain stable weight can enjoy the results for many years to come.
