Although most fashion trends come and go, the popularity of the sleeveless trend has remained constant throughout the years, particularly in warmer climates, and media focus on the incredibly sculpted arms of celebrities such as Madonna, Michelle Obama, and Jennifer Aniston has amplified the American public’s attention on this region of the body.
For many individuals, these factors have served to highlight the problematic aesthetic issues that can occur in this area of the body, and encouraged patients to explore surgical enhancement options for their arms.
During the natural aging process, we lose elasticity and collagen in the deepest layers of our skin, which leads to the condition of arm ptosis (sagging, loose skin), and the underlying layers of muscle, fat and bone begin to deteriorate, causing an overall loss of firmness in the arms. Although exercise can strengthen the musculature of the arms, it cannot correct the problem of sagging skin, nor can it correct the issue of stubborn fat pockets in the upper arm region. Fortunately, brachioplasty (upper arm lift) procedures are designed to address and resolve these issues, and to generally enhance and improve the shape, tone, and contour of the upper arm region.
In addition to the internal forces of gravity, genetics, and aging, patients who have experienced significant weight loss in a short period of time (as a result of weight loss/bariatric surgery or traditional diet and exercise) are often left with large amounts of aesthetically undesirable loose skin in the upper arm region. Because the root of this problem is skin rather than fat, exercise and further weight loss are not effective solutions, which is why many post-massive weight loss patients have turned to brachioplasty surgery to correct this issue. During the upper arm lift procedure, surplus skin is surgically removed and the arm musculature is lifted and tightened, allowing patients to finally see the true results of their weight loss efforts.

BRACHIOPLASTY PROCEDURE AND RECOVERY
During your initial consultation, our board certified plastic surgeons will conduct a thorough medical evaluation in order to determine your aesthetic preferences and current state of health, and he will then create a customized treatment plan tailored specifically to facilitate a safe and successful brachioplasty outcome. There are two general brachioplasty options:
- Full Upper Arm Lift: ideal for patients with a significant amount of excess skin, this procedure involves an incision made in the armpit region that runs along the underside of the arm to the elbow
- Mini Arm Lift: best suited for patients with a moderate amount of excess skin, the mini arm lift entails a similar incision to the full arm lift, but on a smaller scale
After discussing your aesthetic goals and evaluating the degree of your upper arm ptosis (hanging skin), our board certified plastic surgeons will recommend the optimal surgical option for your arm lift procedure.
Brachioplasty is typically performed as a 1-3 hour outpatient surgery, after which you will be released to a family member or friend and can resume your recovery from the comfort of your home. Some level of post-procedural swelling and bruising is to be expected; however most discomfort should subside within 1-2 weeks (pain medication will be provided to ease your symptoms during this time). You will notice immediate visible enhancement of your upper arm region shortly after your surgery, and these results will continue to improve over the next few weeks, as swelling diminishes and your incision site heals.
