Botox & Dysport, Dr. Shapiro, Miami

A neuromodulator is an injectable substance designed to eliminate wrinkles by relaxing the muscles beneath. The popular neuromodulators of today are made with formulations of botulinum toxin, a protein produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. When injected by a knowledgeable injector, small amounts of this substance can temporarily resolve lines that develop from repetitive facial expressions.

Smooth and youthful skin allows us to feel confident. Dr. Shapiro offers several competing brands to his patients, including Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, and Jeuveau, to cater to their preferences. After a simple treatment that only takes a few minutes, neuromodulators can revive a more youthful-looking appearance for a period of three to five months.

At Tribeca Medaesthetics in Miami, Dr. Shapiro helps his patients achieve their skincare goals as well as optimizing their health with balancing hormones, improving fertility, sexual health, and more. Dr. Jason Shapiro is well known for creating personalized plans for those who seek out one of his highly researched, FDA-approved treatments.

How Do Neuromodulators Work?

Fine lines and wrinkles are among the first signs of aging, and they are often challenging to control and prevent. Botox Cosmetic and Dysport are medications produced from botulinum toxin, offering an easy, minimally invasive solution for skin anti-aging. Neuromodulators block the nerve signals that travel to your muscles of facial expression. Without these signals, your muscles will not contract, allowing wrinkles, lines, and creases to soften and relax. Dr. Shapiro will use a small needle to inject Botox/Dysport below the skin of your targeted areas. He will determine a personalized dosage to deliver maximum muscle relaxation without freezing your face. The overall process will take less than 15-20 minutes, and you will be able to resume your normal activities following your appointment.

“Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau allow our patients to look more youthful over a 3 to 5 month period. This is the perfect option for patients who need to be back to work with no downtime.” -Dr. Shapiro

What is the Difference Between Botox and Dysport?

Though these injectables are incredibly similar and contain the same active ingredient, both of these brands undergo different manufacturing and purification processes. Dysport has smaller molecules, making it spread with more ease over a larger area. Because of this subtle difference, the recommended injection dosage for Dysport is usually higher than that of Botox. For every 2.5 to 3 units of Dysport, only about 1 unit of Botox is required. Despite this distinction, Dysport tends to activate a few days sooner than Botox. However, both products sustain results for 3 to 5 months. Its increased ability to maintain anti-aging effects is because it diffuses throughout the treatment area with more ease. (1)

Benefits of Neuromodulators

With Botox and Dysport, in addition to their dramatic aesthetic effects, other benefits include:

  • The procedure is quick & simple. Botox injections are minimally invasive and non-surgical. Dr. Shapiro can complete this treatment within a few minutes in a single in-office visit.
  • They promote a youthful appearance. When performed correctly, Botox or Dysport can create a natural, more youthful appearance within several days. Dr. Shapiro uses these neuromodulators to treat a variety of facial areas from the forehead down to the neck (and even underarms for excessive sweating) depending on the needs of the patient. The most common treatment areas include the forehead, angry 11’s, crow’s feet, and necklines.
  • They prevent future wrinkles. Neuromodulators relax muscles of facial expression to allow for movement without excess muscle contraction. This process can slow the aging process and prevent facial expressions that often cause wrinkles to develop.
  • Injections are cost-effective. Unlike expensive cosmetic surgery, Botox and Dysport treatments create a temporary, youthful facial appearance at a fraction of the cost.

Medical Applications for Botulinum Toxin

You may be familiar with Botox for its cosmetic benefits, but some of the first research into botulinum toxin in the 1970s involved studies into uncovering its medicinal applications. Studies have applied botulinum toxin as a means to treat lazy eye, an excessive sweating disorder called hyperhidrosis, muscle spasms, masseter hypertrophy (enlarged jaw muscles), and even recurrent migraines. Ideal Candidates

You are an ideal candidate for these injections if:

  • You feel that your facial appearance is affected by unwanted wrinkles and folds.
  • Your wrinkles are located in areas that can be treated with Botox or Dysport.
  • You do not have a medical history of myasthenia gravis, a type of neuromuscular disorder.

This effective skin treatment works well for dynamic lines associated with repetitive muscle movements. For example, these injections can treat lines caused by smiling, frowning, furrowing your eyebrows, and other facial expressions. Dr. Shapiro will identify these treatment areas during your in-office or virtual initial consultation.

Personal Consultation

During your consultation with Dr. Shapiro, he will ask you about your main aging concerns and identify the severity of your facial wrinkles. If you have lost significant facial volume, he may suggest dermal fillers or Sculptra to rejuvenate your skin instead of Botox or Dysport injections. However, if wrinkles are your main issue, he will explain in detail everything you need to know about this quick, minimally invasive procedure done in the office. He will also go over the procedure itself and what you should do immediately afterward to maximize and sustain your results.

To begin your journey toward attaining the most refreshed, elastic skin you have had in years, call Tribeca Medaesthetics at (305) 763-8832, fill out the online form to request your consultation, or visit Dr. Shapiro’s practice in Miami.

Treatment Steps

Dysport and Botox procedures may seem simple, but there is a lot of skill involved with administering these injections. First, Dr. Shapiro will cleanse your face. He will then ask you to make several different facial expressions to treat the lines you want to eliminate by identifying the exact muscles to target.

Dr. Shapiro will plan and mark out the various locations he will inject into. For example, to treat “crow’s feet” wrinkles, he will inject the orbicularis oculi muscle to relax the tension around each eye. For frown lines between the brows, he will identify and administer the treatment into the glabellar complex. The key to providing the most effective results is to target depressor muscles- the muscles that contract downward- since they respond to the botulinum toxin by elevating the overlying skin. On the other hand, elevator muscles, such as the frontalis muscle of the forehead, should be treated with caution to not create a descending effect. For treating forehead wrinkles, Dr. Shapiro will use fewer units of botulinum toxin and inject more superficially.

The procedure is highly tolerable since we offer all our patients topical numbing cream containing lidocaine. Furthermore, Dr. Shapiro ensures a comfortable procedure by using ultra-fine needles. Afterward, you will be able to continue your activities of daily living with virtually no downtime.

Aftercare and Results Timeline

Botox & Dysport, Dr. Shapiro, Miami

Getting the most out of your injections means following aftercare instructions to allow the medication to settle in and take action. After this procedure, you can expect to experience some swelling and irritation in the area. For at least 6 hours, you should avoid lying down or moving your head in such a way that could move the medication from one muscle to another. Doing so can cause a different aesthetic outcome than what Dr. Shapiro intended.

Although your skin will recover quickly, it may be in your best interest to avoid working out, rubbing your face, and showering for at least the first day. The results of your Botox injections will start to appear several days after the treatment. Complete results can take 1 to 2 weeks to appear. Make sure to wait a full 7 days before deciding if your results are complete. Our office will reach out to you at that time to see how you are doing and if you need a follow-up visit with Dr. Shapiro.

Corresponding and Complementary Procedures

Dermal Fillers

Dr. Shapiro offers a range of dermal fillers including the collections from Juvéderm, Restylane, Sculptra, and Radiesse. These formulations are designed to treat highly specific cosmetic issues without creating an unnatural-looking effect. Unlike neuromodulators, fillers remodel collagen within the skin itself, helping renew more elastic, supple skin. With Restylane and Juvéderm- made of an all-natural substance called hyaluronic acid- the fillers work by attracting water into the skin, boosting structure and moisturization in the dermis. (3) Sculptra and Radiesse are made from biodegradable materials that provide volume in aged, sunken areas. As the body processes and removes the components of these fillers, it signals dermal cells called fibroblasts to create more elastin and collagen.
