Body Fat Transfer

shutterstock_125322440WHAT IS AUTOLOGOUS FAT TRANSFER?

Autologous fat transfer involves the removal of excess fat from one region of the body (the donor site), followed by the re-injection of the fat into other areas of the body to enhance and smooth the appearance of the skin. Although the fat transfer technique is often utilized for the purposes of facial rejuvenation, it also has positive applications for cosmetic body contouring.

Using your body’s own fat as a natural filler, autologous fat transfer is a permanent and safe way to eliminate fat from “problem” areas of the body where there are excess fatty deposits (ie. stomach, hips) and then use this fat to improve the appearance of a body part that could benefit from the fat injection’s skin smoothing and volumizing properties.

Body contouring applications of autologous fat transfer procedures include, but are not limited to:

  • Breast Augmentation
  • Hand Rejuvenation
  • Gluteal (Buttocks) Augmentation
  • Correction of Contour Deformities: fat transfers can be used to fill in depressions (divots) and to correct contour deformities/irregularities of the breasts and body. These irregularities can occur after a bone marrow transplant (BMX) or mastectomy, or from complications following an overly aggressive liposuction surgery.

To ensure optimal results, it is critical that your fat transfer procedure be carried out by an experienced, Board Certified plastic surgeon such as our board certified plastic surgeons at Tribeca Medaesthetics, located in beautiful Miami Beach, Florida. Our surgeons have the training and experience to perform this procedure with a high level of precision and accuracy, ensuring beautiful contours and long-lasting, natural-looking results.

FAT TRANSFER PROCEDURAL DETAILS

Autologous fat transfer typically takes two hours and can be performed in the office under local anesthesia (some patients may have oral or IV sedation as well) with only minor discomfort. During your fat transfer procedure, Our surgeons will remove excess fat from your abdomen, thighs, or buttocks using a small, sterile cannula. He will then spin the fat in a centrifuge to remove impurities, before using a syringe to inject the fat into the transfer site.

Because of the safe and minimally invasive nature of the fat transfer procedure, post-operative recovery time is brief, and side effects are typically mild.  The exact length of your recovery period will depend on the location and extensiveness of your treatment, but most patients are able to resume their normal activities within 48 hours. Patients may experience some degree of post-procedural swelling, depending on where the transfer occurred and how much fat was transferred; however, all swelling should dissipate within 2-3 weeks. You will notice immediate enhancement in the appearance of your skin after your fat transfer, and these results will continue to improve over the next few months.

In general, autologous fat transfer results can last from 1-3 years; however, as time passes, some of the injected fat will be reabsorbed by the body, and multiple treatment sessions may be necessary to maintain optimal results.
