The defining characteristic of a tattoo is its permanence; however, aesthetic preferences often change and shift over the years, and what may have seemed like a great idea at the time, can become a source of embarrassment down the road. A 2006 survey in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology noted that 24 percent of individuals age 18-50 have tattoos, and 17 percent of those with tattoos have considered removing them.
In the past, tattoo removal was an extremely painful and unreliable process, often resulting in serious damage to the patient’s skin. Fortunately, tattoo removal techniques have evolved significantly over the past few years, and now utilize sophisticated laser technology to safely ‘de-ink’ patients who wish to have their tattoos removed. At Tribeca Medaesthetics, located in Miami Beach, FL, Dr. Jason A. Shapiro and his team of skillful medical aestheticians employ cutting edge Med Lite C6 Q-switched (quality-switched) Yag lasers to help their patients remove tattoos they are dissatisfied with. The Q-switched lasers function by searching for contrast between skin tone and ink and then pulsing intensely on the skin to heat and shatter the ink into particles small enough for the body to absorb.

At Tribeca Medaesthetics, your comfort and safety are our top priorities, and we employ the use of injectable local anesthetics, topical numbing creams, and ice prior to your laser tattoo removal procedure in order to minimize any pain or discomfort. During your initial consultation, Dr. Shapiro will evaluate the size, placement and color of your tattoo in order to provide you with an accurate cost estimate for its removal. We categorize tattoo sizes in the following manner:
- Small Tattoo 1″x1″ to 2×2”
- Medium Tattoo 2″x5″ to 3″x5″
- Large Tattoo 4″x4″ to 5″x5″
- Tattoos larger than 5″x5″ require special quotes based on size, color and location on the body
It is important to remember that even state-of-the-art tattoo removal techniques will not work for every patient, and that the length of treatment and procedural outcome are dependent upon the color of the patient’s skin, the color of the tattoo, and the tattoo’s size and pigmentation. In general, black tattoos are easier to remove than color tattoos, and removing tattoos on fair-skinned patients is a faster process than on patients with darker skin. Complete tattoo removal requires multiple sessions spaced approximately 8 weeks apart.
