Gynecomastia refers to the medical condition of abnormally enlarged breasts in men, and although this condition does not present significant health risks, it can be profoundly detrimental to the emotional well-being and self-confidence of the men who suffer from it. Gynecomastia accounts for more than 65% of all male breast disorders, and may be present in one (unilaterally) or both (bilaterally) breasts.

The enlarged breasts associated with the condition of gynecomastia result from the body’s production of excess glandular breast tissue, excess fatty tissue, or a combination of surplus fatty tissue and breast tissue. Many cases of gynecomastia are rooted in genetic conditions or natural hormonal imbalances; however, the use of specific drugs and medications; certain illnesses or medical conditions; and significant weight gain can all exacerbate the symptoms of gynecomastia and cause visible breast enlargement in men.

Male breast reduction (gynecomastia correction) surgery is a safe and effective procedure that is performed to address and correct the embarrassing symptoms of gynecomastia by flattening and enhancing the contours of the chest, while reducing the overall size of the male breasts. The popularity of male breast reduction procedures has continued to surge over the past 5-10 years, as the stigma surrounding male plastic surgery has declined, and advocacy groups have brought new awareness about the condition of gynecomastia to the American public.

Breast reduction surgery for men is an outpatient procedure, and is performed using either intravenous (twilight) sedation or general anesthesia. The underlying cause of the male breast enlargement will determine the exact procedural details for the gynecomastia correction surgery. If excess glandular tissue is responsible for the breast enlargement, Our surgeons will make incisions in the breast region in order to surgically remove the surplus breast tissue. If excess fatty (adipose) tissue is the primary cause of the patient’s enlarged breasts, our surgeons will employ the use of liposuction techniques (alone, or in addition to excision techniques) during the surgery.

Following your male breast reduction surgery, dressings or bandages will be placed over your incisions, a support garment or elastic bandage will be utilized to reduce swelling, and a small drain will be placed under the skin to drain excess blood or fluid. The results of gynecomastia correction surgery are typically permanent; however, should a patient begin (or resume) taking a medication or drug responsible for causing breast enlargement, the gynecomastia symptoms may reoccur. Similarly, if a patient gains a significant amount of weight after surgery, his breasts may increase in size as a result of the heightened levels of adipose (fatty) tissues.
