JUVEDERM Injectable Gel  is an FDA-approved, “next generation” dermal filler comprised of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that functions by restoring lost volume and hydration to the skin’s surface, thereby smoothing and filling in lines and wrinkles, and enhancing the overall condition of the skin.

JUVEDERM was formulated by the creators of Botox Cosmetic, and was specifically designed to enhance and rejuvenate the appearance of facial skin that has been negatively impacted by the aging process and harsh environmental factors (ie. sun, stress, pollution).

Treatment with JUVEDERM enables patients to address and correct the following cosmetic problems related to aging and facial volume loss, including, but not limited to:

  • Laugh Lines (Nasolabial Folds): lines and creases running from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth
  • Vertical Lip Lines: lines/wrinkles above or around the lips as a result of age or environmental factors such as sunlight and smoking
  • Marionette Lines: lines that run straight downwards from the corners of the mouth
  • Tear trough lines: fine lines/wrinkles in the area along the orbital rim (around the eyes)
  • Thin Lips: some patients are genetically predisposed to having thin lips, while others experience a loss of volume in the lip region as a result of the natural aging process
  • Lost Facial Volume: with age, the face naturally loses its youthful fullness and volume, and can begin to appear gaunt and tired
  • Undesirable Facial Structure: genetics may have predisposed some individuals to facial features they would like to enhance (ie. cheekbones they wish to add definition to, or a chin and jawline they want to strengthen)

JUVEDERM is ideally suited to treating all of the aforementioned cosmetic issues, and its pliant gel consistency results in a smoother, more natural-looking appearance than many of its dermal filler predecessors, and may also minimize post-treatment skin and tissue irritation. Another advantage to treatment with hyaluronic-acid-based JUVEDERM is that the skin smoothing results can last 6-9 months after the initial treatments, which is longer than the results observed with some collagen-based fillers.

Dermal filler injections require a high degree of skill and precision, which is why it is imperative to have your JUVEDERM injections administered by a trained practitioner who specializes in this field.

Because the hyaluronic acid in JUVEDERM is not derived from animals, no allergy testing is required prior to treatment. There are a number of different variations within the JUVEDERM family, and after conducting a thorough assessment of your skin condition, Dr. Shapiro will determine which JUVEDERM formulation is best suited to fulfill your unique aesthetic goals. Some JUVEDERM formulations contain an anesthetic (lidocaine), and will not require the application of a topical anesthetic prior to treatment. Your JUVEDERM treatment will be performed in our office and typically takes no longer than 20 minutes, after which you can resume your normal daily activities.

After your treatment, you will be advised to avoid strenuous exercise, exposure to sun or heat, and consumption of alcoholic beverages. Potential temporary side effects of JUVEDERM include:  tenderness, swelling, redness, firmness, bruising, and bumps at the injection sites. These symptoms are generally mild to moderate in nature and resolve within 7 days.  Following your JUVEDERM injections you will be able to observe an immediate improvement in the volume and overall appearance of your skin in the treated areas. Although JUVEDERM offers long-lasting results after just one treatment, each patient metabolizes dermal fillers differently, and periodic maintenance treatments may be necessary to preserve and maintain optimal results.

Complementary cosmetic skin treatments (ie. chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, microdermabrasion) can be performed in conjunction with your JUVEDERM injections to amplify and maximize your skin rejuvenating results. JUVEDERM works especially well as a complement to Botox® and Dysport® injections, because each injectable is formulated to correct a different type of wrinkle, and by combining their abilities, patients can observe a remarkable overall reduction of facial lines and wrinkles.
