Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is a minimally invasive, yet highly effective skin treatment that addresses a number of troublesome skin problems by utilizing a laser to direct pulsating beams of light at the skin, which safely removes the damaged skin one layer at a time.

Following the removal of the epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin), the laser employs the use of thermal energy to heat the deeper layers of the skin (dermis), effectively stimulating the body to produce new collagen fibers, resulting in more youthfully radiant, and beautifully smooth skin.

Laser skin resurfacing offers the benefit of allowing for extremely precise, targeted treatment, thereby avoiding the problems of skin lightening (hypopigmentation), and preventing damage to the delicate facial skin, while efficiently improving a myriad of problematic skin issues, including, but not limited to:

Laser skin resurfacing treatments are typically performed using one of two types of lasers:

Erbium Lasers: employ the use of a fractionated erbium beam to target and remove thousands of microscopic sections of damaged skin, while simultaneously stimulating the body’s natural collagen production mechanism, ensuring that the damaged skin will be replaced with healthy, glowing, radiant skin. Erbium laser treatment is safe and appropriate for use on all skin types, including Latino, African-American, and Asian skin. Although treatment results generally peak after 3-5 sessions (scheduled about 3-6 weeks apart), patients will continue to observe gradual improvements in their skin condition over the next few months, as the a result of the newly amplified collagen levels.

CO2 Lasers: deliver very short, pulsed light energy to remove thin layers of skin without damaging the surrounding tissues. Because the CO2 laser can penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin, treatment with a CO2 laser is extremely powerful, and after only one treatment substantial improvements to the condition of the skin will be noticeable. Additionally, CO2 laser resurfacing offers long-term benefit of stimulating new collagen production and growth, meaning that the appearance of your skin will continue to improve over the next six months.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Shapiro will carefully assess the condition of your skin in order to help you to select the optimal type of laser treatment to bring your specific aesthetic goals to fruition.
