The skin’s primary function is to serve as a protective barrier from harsh environmental elements (ie. sun, wind), but in serving this purpose the skin itself is exposed to these elements, which can negatively impact the skin’s appearance and condition.

This problem is exacerbated by the fact that our collagen and elastin (proteins responsible for keeping our skin youthfully firm) levels decrease as we age, causing our skin to appear wrinkled and aged. Fortunately, there is a non-invasive, but effective skin treatment called microdermabrasion that can rectify these problems and restore a youthful, glowing complexion.

Microdermabrasion utilizes microscopic crystals to remove the outermost layer of keratinized (dead), flaky skin cells, to reveal a radiant, luminous complexion. Microdermabrasion treatments offer a number of key benefits:

  • Improve the condition of sun-damaged, acne prone, scaly, peeling, or rough skin
  • Minimize the appearance of large pores and acne scars
  • Provide the long-term benefit of stimulating collagen production, which accelerates the growth of a new layer of skin cells with heightened collagen and elastin levels.
  • Help the skin to feel and appear softer, tighter and smoother, with enhanced texture, tone and color
  • Enhance the effectiveness of skin care products, by allowing them to penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin, where their active ingredients are the most effective and have the greatest impact on the skin’s condition.

In order to achieve optimal skin smoothing results, it is important to have your microdermabrasion treatments performed by a skillful and experienced practitioner, such as Dr.  Jason A. Shapiro, Medical Director at Tribeca Medaesthetics. Dr. Shapiro makes it a priority to stay up to date with the latest developments in the field of non-surgical skin rejuvenation procedures, in order to offer his patients the most effective treatments, with minimal side effects and long-lasting results. Microdermabrasion takes only 20-30 minutes per session, is completely painless, and requires no post-procedural downtime, making it easy to incorporate into even the busiest of schedules. Following your microdermabrasion procedure, a healing lotion and sunblock will be applied, and many patients elect to have a mild facial peel performed at this time, in order to further amplify the rejuvenating effects of the microdermabrasion treatment. After your microdermabrasion treatment your skin will be very sensitive to the sun, so it is very important to wear a quality sunscreen and to avoid all forms of sun exposure—both natural and artificial (ie. tanning beds) for at least 2-3 days. The typical microdermabrasion treatment protocol involves 5-8 treatments spaced approximately 7-10 days apart, followed by periodic maintenance treatments every 3-4 months; however, Dr. Shapiro will work with you to develop a customized treatment plan that best accommodates your schedule and meets your skincare needs.
