Chin Implants

Chin augmentation (chin implant) surgery is performed to improve upon the structural balance and proportions of one’s facial profile, and is an excellent corrective procedure for patients who present with a “weak” or receding chin.

During a chin augmentation procedure, biocompatible or silicone implants are utilized to increase the dimensions of the lower jaw and to elongate the facial appearance, thereby creating the appearance of a wider and/or stronger chin, and a more symmetrically balanced face. Many patients seek out chin implant surgery as a permanent facial enhancement solution after trying various short-term chin augmentation options, such as temporary soft-tissue dermal fillers.

Chin augmentation surgery is a highly customizable procedure, with chin implants offered in a variety of sizes, shapes, and materials. After listening to your surgical goals and aesthetic preferences, and conducting a thorough assessment of your facial bone structure, our board certified plastic surgeons at Tribeca Medaesthetics will select the chin implant option and surgical technique to ensure the safe and optimal fulfillment of your surgical objectives.

Chin augmentation surgery is generally performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia or IV sedation, and lasts approximately 30-45 minutes (unless performed with other facial enhancement procedures). During your procedure, our surgeons will make a small incision under your chin (for silicone implants) or inside your mouth (for biocompatible implants), and will then create a pocket directly over your lower jawbone to accommodate the implant. After placing the implant inside the pocket, our surgeons will secure its placement by affixing it to bone or soft tissue before closing the incision.

Following your chin augmentation surgery, pain medications will be provided to alleviate any soreness and swelling, and your chin will be taped to stop the implant from shifting as a result of swelling in the jaw region during your initial recovery period (elevating your head will also help to ameliorate any swelling). You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after your surgery; however, after your anesthesia wears off you may resume light activities, and should only have the minor side effect of temporary numbness in your lower lip region, similar to what you might experience after a trip to the dentist. If your chin augmentation involved a biocompatible implant and the incision was made inside your mouth, you will be restricted to a soft or liquid diet for a few days and your stiches will naturally dissolve after several weeks. If your chin implant surgery utilized a silicone implant and the incision was made under your chin, you will return to the Tribeca Medaesthetics office in approximately one week to have your sutures removed.
